Childhood poverty is associated with higher rates of academic failure, grade
retention, behavior problems and underdevelopment of socio-emotional
skills. Studies have also shown that these outcomes are preventable and that
early childhood educational experiences have a positive relationship with
development of healthy social and emotional skills, and critical pre-reading
and language skills that will serve a child throughout their educational
experience.
The early childhood education goals of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students
program are to increase access to high quality early childhood education
and to provide support and strengthen the school/home connection with
families of preschool age children.
