experienceddriverIf you've been caught breaking the law in Virginia, and you've received a moving violation ticket, chances are you've also accrued points on your driver record. But don't worry – all hope is not lost. There's still a chance for you to redeem yourself and become a safe driver before the heavy fines and penalties kick in.

You can thank the Virginia Driver Improvement (VDI) course. The VDI is a system of checks and balances designed to penalize drivers who frequently skirt the law, and reward drivers who stay within its confines.

Virginia Traffic Violations and Point System

Here's how it works: In Virginia, violations are broken into three categories, according to their point value. There are 3-point violations, 4-point violations, and 6-point violations.

3-Point Violations:

  • Speeding 1-9 mph above the posted speed limit
  • Impeding traffic, slow speed
  • Improper passing
  • Changing course after signaling
  • Failure to give way when abreast of another car
  • Driving through safety zone
  • Unauthorized use of crossover on controlled highway

4-Point Violations:

  • Reckless driving - failure to stop before entering a highway
  • Speeding 10-19 mph above the posted speed limit
  • Passing to the left of approaching vehicle
  • Failure to drive to the right and stop for police/fire/emergency vehicle
  • Failure to stop for pedestrian with white cane
  • Failure to yield to funeral procession
  • Failure to signal before moving from curb

6-Point Violations:

  • Speeding 20 mph or more above the posted speed limit
  • Involuntary manslaughter
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Driving after being declared a habitual offender

As you can see, the point value increases with the severity of the violation.

Benefits of Virginia Driving School

With the Virginia driving school course, good drivers can earn "safe points" to offset any "demerit points" that they may have been assigned. There are 2 ways to earn safe points: spend a calendar year without incident (beginning with the day you get your Virginia drivers license, and restarting the day following your more recent citation), or take a DMV-approved driving school in Virginia.

Because the points can add up quickly, thousands of drivers are taking Virginia traffic school courses online, just in case they do get a ticket. Obviously, one of the benefits of having a clean Virginia driving record is that you're not at risk of added fines, license suspension, or increased insurance rates. But there are other benefits as well. You'll begin as an ordinary caterpillar who maybe runs the occasional red light, but you'll emerge a beautiful, safe-driving butterfly, holding the wheel at 10 and 2, and stopping for pedestrians with a smile.

You could even earn yourself a discount on your insurance policy by taking our Virginia driving school. It depends on your carrier, but some companies grant an additional 10% off their policy just for completing the course.
