Virginia State Superintendent, Dr. Staples, has issued the following statement:
“On, a total eclipse of the sun will be visible across the entire continental United States for the first time in almost 40 years. The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun. They allow in too much sunlight.”
Although, Stafford County Public Schools is not in session, our students are involved in numerous athletic and activities within our division. SCPS does not have any school sponsored viewing events taking place as we do not have the appropriate viewing equipment.
As a precautionary measure, we are informing all schools to cancel any and all student activities between the hours of 12 noon and 5pm on Monday, August 21, 2017. This will allow our families to experience this memorable experience together under parent /guardian supervision. We will also be sending out information to our families through Peachjar and posting on our website.
