Architecture enriches our lives by offering us environments that are sensibly compelling, thought provoking, and capable of lifting our spirits. In addition to being beautiful, architecture is, by ancient definition, functional and durable. Like art, architecture is permeated by dualities. It is stable and transitory, measurable and immeasurable, and capable of both being touched and touching us. Like science, architecture involves systematic study. Its methods are iterative, experimental, and rely on intense observation. By intertwining the poetic and practical, architecture is uniquely poised to address the challenges of contemporary life and build the culture of the 21st century.

The undergraduate Architecture curriculum begins with studies in the Foundation Program in the first year, intended to cultivate a student's aesthetic judgment and to stimulate a dialogue based on the student designer's attitudes, knowledge, and concerns in working with multiple scales of environmental design activity. Professional studies in Architecture in the second and third years focus on fundamental building design principles. In the fourth year, opportunities exist for off-campus study, through the Study Abroad Programs, the Chicago Studio, the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center, and the Extern program. The program culminates in an independent design investigation in the fifth-year thesis project.

Graduation checksheets for B.Arch. students

The graduate curriculum in architecture is structured to accommodate diverse student needs. This is accomplished by offering a combination of professional and post-professional program options, all of which lead to the degree of Master of Architecture (M.Arch.). The one-year M.Arch.1 option results in a post-professional degree, while the two-year M.Arch.2 option and the three-and-one-half-year M.Arch.3 option result in the conferring of a first professional degree, fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).

The Master of Science in Architecture program allows a student to conduct a research-based program of study which can be expected to contribute to the body of knowledge in the design and building professions. Research concentrations include Building Science, Interior Design, and Urban Design.

Doctoral studies in architecture and design are for those students who desire to pursue careers in the research fields of advanced professional and academic practice and teaching. The program draws from the School faculty's diverse experiences and backgrounds to establish a climate in which scholarship and creativity can flourish.
